Careers In Interior Design

Clyde Lee Dennis asked:

For someone seeking a career in interior design there are many areas one could get started in. All the information you would need can be found online or by taking a trip down to your local library. Another obvious source of information that is often overlooked is to contact anyone or several of the interior design firms in your area.

Like any career, it can be difficult to find work without previous experience but also like in most fields this hurdle can be overcome through hard work and effective study.

Getting an education is the starting point for a career of interior design. Information on finding high quality accredited schools can be found in your Yellow Pages or on the Internet. Once you received a diploma, it can still be hard to find work. It’s not impossible to do, it just takes a little time so you’ll have to be patient and show persistence.

One thing that is important to consider is that you should concentrate on your own strengths and interests in the field of design. For example, if you are strong in residential design then focus your research on companies which specialize in residential interior design. You can always work on areas you are not as strong in once you have your foot in the door. Working on your own during your time off work, in the evenings and on weekends can also improve your skills. Another thing you could do to gain experience is offer your services free for a few hours each week. This is an excellent way to gain the experience and knowledge you need, while at the same get your name spread about within the interior design community.

Through your research you’ll discover interior design career information that will provide you with many different areas that you could work in such as healthcare, retail, government, residential and commercial. Spend some time at the local library doing valuable research on interior design career information. You will be able to locate information on names of interior design firms and their addresses, their telephone and fax information along with the contact name at the specific design firm.

When searching for any new job you must have an eye catching resume and cover letter. Lately it has become an acceptable practice to simply burn your resume onto a CD and present it to prospective employees that way. Another great way to present yourself if you’re inclined to do so is develop a website of your portfolio and be sure to include a link it with your resume. Your resume is a vital tool when doing your interior design career information and job search. If you’re mailing your resumes out you should follow up with a telephone call about a week after you’ve sent them out to each employer. Your goal should be to simply introduce yourself, and perhaps secure an interview. This is an important part of the job search strategy and one that should not be overlooked.
